How and why do parents expect their children to show respect if they never showed them any?

This sounds weird and strange, but in most households, children are talked to and treated casually. We need to understand that children are new to everything and demand nurturing while growing up. Like children are taught how to read and write, they require sessions for showing respect too. Daycare centers are attracting importance in the field because of such sessions that they focus on.

Schools and pre-schools also have the same motive, but daycare takes the limelight this time. Since every teaching institution is more focused on academics and teaching kids how to behave and talk to people around them, daycare schools aim to teach how to respect others. It is evident that respect is a concept that must be taught, not just by teaching sessions but by being the idol.

Parents should be aware of how their actions have an adverse impact on the kids too. Until they show respect to their children and even in front of them, the kids will never understand it practically.

Here are a few practical ways to teach children how to and the importance of respect.

Model respect for kids: Studies say children try copying what they see. If they see people disrespecting, shouting, and demeaning each other, they will eventually turn out to be the same. So, to teach respect to the children, you should be a model first, and then they will try to learn what you do.

Don't replace respect with fear: Parents usually try to force the lessons of respect on their children. They think that scaring the kids will bring them a sense of respect. While most parents do this, it is wrong. The parents should be cordial, respectful, and expressive while trying to teach their kids about respect and only then expect the same in return.

Don't ignore little efforts: Children try to get better at what they learn and take small steps towards implementing their learnings. If they show tiny improvements and understanding of what you teach, make sure you acknowledge and appreciate them for the same. This motivates them to do better and gives them confidence.
